13 Death

The Dream
The King of Death is smiling. His stance is somewhat tentative, as if he might begin to dance at any moment. His skeletal form is a reminder that death exists within life; his posture and smiling face reveal that new life will come from death. He does not want to be feared, for he stands for transformation, re-birth and renewal, and for the end that comes to all things. All the superficial has been pared away; all the desires of the flesh have been banished. Death walks in a universal garden of vibrant, fiery flowers, next to a life-giving stream under a sky whose stars are linked together by their common fate. With the cutting away of old growth, new growth arises. When transition occurs there is a new beginning. An act of release can make it possible to move forward once again. Though there is profound change, it is part of the cycle of renewal and re-birth, and can be seen as a form of liberation. To fear Death is to fear life. We truly live by living in harmony with Nature's laws.

The Awakening
There will be a profound change, which may be painful if resisted. If the ending is unhappy, let it go and move forward. Seek the essentials of the matter, ignoring all superfluous detail. Abandon old patterns and a new, rewarding path will be revealed. Do not fear change or passing away. Your fear of Death must be recognized and confronted before it is allowed to interfere further with your enjoyment of life.

The Enchantment
If you are having trouble dealing with a change that has come into your life, place a bunch of newly cut flowers in a vase. Over the next thirteen days observe them as they whither and die. Take them to a burial site and whisper these words as you cover them with earth: "Old flowers, be new flowers, release my soul, renew my powers." Let go of your pain and walk away.

Always perform our Enchantments in a safe manner. Use caution with scissors and all sharp objects. All candles and all fires should only be lit in well ventilated areas and in appropriately strong and fireproof metal or ceramic containers that are stable and have walls to prevent sparks from leaping out. Never leave a candle or fire burning unattended.
