Gifts of the Goddess

Thousands of years ago, our supposedly primitive ancestors noticed something: Life emerges only from the female of every species (except the seahorse!). Anthropologists who have studied truly ancient civilizations, like the one in Malta that predate The Pyramids of Egypt, have found that pre-historic people thought of the Supreme Being as a Woman. For thousands of years they worshiped The Goddess and every female, as a living symbol of The Goddess, was held sacred (from the Latin sacer meaning "untouchable." Harming a woman was one of the most serious offences possible. The concept of a male dominated culture with a male Supreme Being is relatively recent, in historical terms, and may have come about when the primarily agricultural societies succeeded too well and their increased populations fought for scarce land and resources.

Today, the word "God" conjures up the images of an all-powerful, all-knowing Supreme Being while the word "Goddess" is usually spelled with a small "g" and usually refers to either a quaint myth from antiquity or a sexually objectified woman. This would be unfortunate enough, if it didn’t seem to reflect the second class status of women in our "modern" world. From the two-tiered wage scales of corporate America to the Taliban regime’s genocide against the women of Afghanistan, powerful men and nearly all-men governments around the world dictate to women what they can do with their bodies, their lives, and their children’s lives. If the positions were reversed, the situation would lead to violent rebellion.

Growing up in a culture dominated by men, from God on down, has produced a level of cultural conditioning that is so insidious as to be almost invisible, even to most women, who seem to have bonded with their tormentors, what is commonly known as "The Stockholm Syndrome." The core belief of our culture, that "Man was created in God’s image," understandably leaves many women uneasy, resentful, or angry. What is hard to understand is why so many women put up with the situation. We believe it is because the situation has led to a pervasive low self-esteem which is hard to surmount.

Gifts of The Goddess Affirmation Cards is dedicated to helping everyone, women and men, to empower themselves at the very core of their consciousness and see clearly by piercing the veil of the way things are. Just because things are a certain way, doesn’t mean that they have always been that way or that they will always be that way. It is up to us to shape our lives and shape the time we live in. We humbly submit that the little deck you have before you can help you do that.

Of course, we are aware that all of the thousands of names, male and female, that have been given to the un-nameable Force that created and continues to create, Goddess, God, All-That-Is, The Great Mystery, or what have you, are merely woman-made conveniences. To impose a gender on It is to make It more comprehensible and accessible. We are all children of these same loving Parents. However, to balance things out a bit, I prefer to think of the Supreme Being as The Goddess. It helps shake up my entrenched belief systems, the first step in changing them for the better.

Every day can be seen as a gift from The Goddess. Of course, some days are easier to accept as gifts from a benevolent deity than others. On difficult days, it is a good thing to remember that one of The Goddess’ gifts to us is the power to change our lives by using affirmations.
