DIVIANA meant Divine Being in ancient Rome and was another name for The Great Mother Goddess. Although thought of as the Goddess of woodland dells and the ruler of beasts (both tame and wild), her power extended much further. DIVIANA was closely associated with the Moon, ruler of the sign Cancer, the sign of the mother in astrology.

In a nighttime world, where the only source of humanly created light was a torch or campfire, the darkness was a strange and frightening place. The Moon seemed a beautiful and caring maternal figure who brought comfort. She had a special understanding and intuition about Life's problems. Calm and cool, she shone down upon all while lovers united under her magical spell.

Lovers have always been attracted to the Moon and moonlight and so have the worshippers of The Goddess. She gave women the gift of conception, an easy delivery in childbirth, and tenderly guarded their motherhood.

At her festivals, many torches were carried to light her wooded glade and cast their reflections in a nearby lake just as the Goddess Moon brought light to shine upon the water.

Whenever we look up at the Moon we see the ever-lasting symbol of Motherhood, Womankind, and The Goddess.
