Sagittarius The Centaur

Sagittarius Astrological Symbol: An arrow
November 23 to December 21

The arrow of Sagittarius represents Chiron, the bow-wielding Centaur and half-man and half-horse and first doctor of herbal medicine, sage and tutor of Achilles. The legend of Chiron may have started out with stories of a wise and skillful hunter, perhaps the leader of the first tribe to hunt from the back of a horse. As the hunting parties of different tribes crossed paths, they could have exchanged stories of Chiron's deeds as they sat under the night sky discussing the far-away lands and the different religions, philosophies and customs they had seen in their long journeys and made possible by travel on horseback.

Associations
Sagittarius is associated with travel that broadens the mind; higher learning; the widespread dissemination of knowledge; the great outdoors; natural healing; religions, philosophies, customs and laws; and all things foreign. The part of the body ruled by Sagittarius is the thighs (which move us around). People born during the time of Sagittarius function best when they are learning and teaching.

The Challenge of Being a Sagittarius
The symbol for Sagittarius is Chiron, the bow-wielding Centaur - half man and half horse. Chiron the Centaur was the first doctor of herbal medicine and a wise sage. In Greek mythology, he was the teacher of the great warrior Achilles.

The legend of Chiron may have started out with stories of a wise and skillful hunter, perhaps the leader of the first tribe to hunt from the back of a horse. The other tribes might have seen them as being half-man and half-horse. Travel on horseback made it possible for people to see many more different places and tribes with all kinds of unique customs. When they returned from their journeys, they kept their own tribe hypnotized with stories of these far off lands.

Those born under the sign of Sagittarius share this love of travel and animals - especially horses, the great outdoors, natural healing, and all things foreign. They are the philosopher teachers of the zodiac and without this vital function, each generation would be forced to start from scratch without the accumulated wisdom of the ages to guide them. Sagittarians not only keep the torch of learning alive, they actively seek out knowledge and the wisdom to use it properly. They are interested only in the ultimate truth; otherwise it would not be worth knowing and teaching to others.

This is why Sagittarians have such a reputation for being blunt. Sagittarians feel that anyone who is telling the truth should be able to defend his position against any question, even if that question is totally tactless and without regard for social customs. Sagittarians are in a hurry and want to keep traveling, learning, and spreading what they've learned. They don't have time to waste beating around the bush. Never expect them to apologize for having annoyed someone when they were only trying to get at the truth.

The lesson for Sagittarians to learn is that there is an important reason why their life does not provide them with as many opportunities to travel, to learn, and to teach, as they would like. They have come into the world with the astrological sign Sagittarius because they want to learn how to study, travel, and especially how to teach. They can use their desire and capacity to expand their understanding of the way the world works in many ways. They can use it to take them around the world, both through actual travel and through travel in their minds via philosophy and learning. Publishing and broadcasting are two other ways to bring the world to us.

When Sagittarians are required to act immediately, without having the time to think about what they are doing, they possess all the courage they need to do anything they need to do. However, when they are allowed the luxury of having enough time to think about what is required of them, they are inclined to be timid and cautious. It is important that Sagittarians not become so inspired by each new piece of wisdom they learn that they decide to put off the plans of yesterday to make yet another grand plan to change their lives, and then cancel their plans tomorrow when new information becomes available.

It is also important that Sagittarians avoid their tendency to resist taking care of the details necessary to implement any successful plan. No sign is as fearless and broad minded as theirs when it comes to encountering the new and the strange, yet they need to develop tolerance for the necessary and the routine. Thinking big is a useful trait, but it will only take you so far.
