Aquarius The Water-Bearer

Aquarius Astrological Symbol: Water whipped into waves by the wind
January 21 to February 19

By the time the Sun entered the sign of Aquarius, our ancestors were beginning to feel confined. Those that weren't snowed in would only bother to visit their closest friends as well as other neighbors with whom they had agreed to band together to help each other survive the winter. With their friends they could escape the monotony of the winter days by sharing their wildest hopes and wishes for the future. Inspired by the acceptance of their friends, it was possible to envision a whole world of friends, each pouring out nourishing ideas and inventions for the good of all. These ideas could have been thought crazy by those who didn't allow themselves to creatively dream about the future, and so those with Aquarian tendencies had to learn to detach themselves from the comments by the less understanding members of the humanity they desired to serve. This made some of them rebels desiring freedom at all costs.

Associations
Aquarius came to be associated with ideas for the good of humanity, hence the Water-bearer pours his water onto the earth for all humanity to drink from; friends; hopes; wishes; associations such as co-ops and unions; eccentricity and genius; invention; detachment from emotions; rebelliousness; and the desire for unrestricted freedom. The parts of the body ruled by Aquarius are the ankles and wrists (the most unrestricted joints of our body). People born during the sign of Aquarius function best when they have an outlet for their desire to change the world and make it better for the sake of humanity.

The Challenge of Being an Aquarius
The symbol of the sign Aquarius is the Water bearer pouring out his bounty to quench the thirst of world. For this reason, many people mistakenly think Aquarius is a water sign. Water was the element the ancient sages connected with the realm of emotion, empathy, and intuition. However, Aquarius is not a water sign. The element associated with Aquarius is Air, the realm of ideas. People born under the sign Aquarius like to think in broad and theoretical terms and they want to "pour out" their ideas to quench the thirst of the world.

Being mistaken for a water sign is a very significant clue to the lesson for Aquarians. Water symbolizes emotions and empathy and Aquarians are often perceived to be lacking in both.

Aquarians, being concerned for the good of all, are inspired to invent solutions to society's problems. They are the mad scientists and absent minded professors of the zodiac. To do this requires a freethinking mind, unfettered by tradition or fear of disturbing the status quo. Aquarians learn from the past to change what they find distasteful in the present, for by doing so they create the future they envision. The emotional detachment necessary to clearly see society's problems and to try to solve those problems without regard to the ramifications of the actions necessary to make these sometimes drastic changes make Aquarians seem to lack empathy for the hardships of individuals. Aquarians should examine actions they plan to take to make sure they will not be hurtful to others, even if that is not their intent.

Once the scientific minds of Aquarians finish thinking about a subject theoretically, they return to the world of emotions. In fact, they can easily feel themselves being overcome by feelings of empathy for those less fortunate. This is what inspires them in the first place to come up with solutions to society's urgent problems. This brings us to the basic lessons all Aquarians would do well to keep in mind as they read the meanings of card they draw from The Enchanted Astrologer's deck.

A baby does not arrive in the world already an expert in the things his astrological sign is known for. Aquarians are here to learn how to invent ways to make real the future they can so easily see in their minds' eye. This is the reason why their lives does not provide them with as many opportunities to enjoy the freedom and other resources necessary to turn their innovative ideas into reality as they would like.

When Aquarians finally become convinced that they must stop dreaming about the kind of future they would like to live in and start working to make it a reality, they can be counted on to work until their goals are achieved. In fact, they sometimes make such extreme changes that in their enthusiasm to get rid of the old ways, they can destroy valuable things from the past that still have great usefulness. The old expression for this is "Throwing out the baby with the bathwater."

If Aquarians want to have the kind of lives they have always dreamed of having, they must avoid letting their tendency to go to extremes cause them to imagine that they must make radical changes in their lives that are really too much to ask of themselves and others, changes that are bound to be too difficult to maintain. People do not usually have to make sweeping, radical changes in their lives to bring in the love, wealth, and success that they desire, especially the kind of extreme changes that Aquarians would be willing to make without a second's thought.
