Giving Thanks For Louise Hay

Yesterday we had lunch with Louise Hay, author of the truly life-changing book, "You Can Heal Your Life," and many others. I was in awe of her, having just seen her movie, and a bit nervous to meet her because I am not one to change who I am to accommodate the expectations of anyone, not even someone I'm in awe of like Louise. I enjoy life, I always have, but especially now because at this time in my life - I'll be 59 in January - I am one of the luckiest people on the planet and I am very aware that this, my 24/7 life with Amy and Zane, our health and ability to get around, our work in the world helping others, this is a precious gift that may not last. And so I am like a candle wick sucking up the joy of my life and burning brightly with it shinning light and warmth on those around me. But there are some people who don't like a person who is happy.

I realized long ago that I use humor and kindness like a bat uses radar. But where I bat uses radar to find its way in three dimensional space, I use humor and kindness to find out the kind of people that are in my space. How they react to my honest effort to be myself tells me if I can enjoy myself to the full or if I should watch what I say, either to protect a sensitive, hurting person, or to protect myself from an emotionally unintelligent or wounded person who might get aggressive in their attempt at self-protection. If I find myself with someone who doesn't "get" me, I do my best to make the most of our encounter and then do my best to make sure we don't have another one.

But all my concerns melted upon meeting Louise. She was radiantly beautiful, a glowing reminder of what we can all be if we let love flow through us no matter what age we are - she's 80 years young! She was interesting and interested in us and everything - I usually find that people who are interested are interesting, don't you? She didn't "talk at" us, the way so many people do. She talked with us. It was true pleasure and I look forward to seeing her again in May in San Diego for their big event.

Hay House does these wonderful gatherings where some of their incredible authors come together to form a lecture program that can last a day or more. They even do cruises! Amy and I have done seven cruises with other organizations and I can tell you that they are the most fun possible! I can only imagine how much fun are the Hay House cruises.

Meeting Louise and her incredible friend Melanie, who I can't wait to get to know better so I can write a blog about her, was yet another indication to Amy and me that we were in the right place at the right time. Our friend and publishing guardian angel, Patty Gift and her friend Yves Durif, one of the best hair stylists in the world (his salon is in the famous Carlyle Hotel in New York City) arranged the day for us and we will add this to the long list of things for which we will be eternally grateful.
