make your base secure

Truth is truth; like gold, it's where you find it. I've always searched for truths that applied to more than just the subject that revealed them and it's rewarded me more than I can say.

For example, those of you who've read my posts over the years know I consider to be a penultimate spiritual truth Prussian General Carll Von Clausewitz's first rule of warfare, "Make your base secure." This seems so simple but until it's done anything and everything you do is doomed to failure, both in war and in life.

You can think of it like another life or death admonition: the warning we get on airplanes to put our oxygen mask on first before assisting anyone else. How can we help anyone else when we, ourselves, are in trouble?

This truth, which I consider to be self-evident and a spiritual truth, is at the heart of all I do - I try to help others make their base secure through my books and my readings - and all I believe. It informs everything in my daily life, my attitude toward my marriage, my home and everything else including my political beliefs.

I learned at a very young age from my NYPD father that there were bad people in the world, people who viewed kindness as weakness, who wanted to take from you what they believed to be theirs but was actually yours, people who were damaged from upbringings that would make anyone a vicious murderer. I learned that there are lots and lots of these people and that you can't talk sense to them, you can't change their minds, you can't bribe them, they're just plain crazy evil.

I also learned that it was my responsibility to stay away from these people but, if I encountered them, it was my responsibility to make sure that they didn't hurt me or anyone I cared about. So I learned to take care of myself in case I failed to keep myself out of the way of these bad people. I also learned that sometimes good people lose to the bad people, so we good people have to be good at protecting ourselves, too. It led me to being a bodyguard and security person in the film business in NYC.

Of course, as a good person devoted to lifelong learning I also learned how to play musical instruments, write songs, sing in smokey bars before smoking in them was banned; I learned how to predict the future using astrology, tarot and other divination methods; I learned how to "listen" to those on the other side "speak;" I learned how to write books, agent them to publishers, manufacture them, etc. All the while I learned how to be a better and better husband to my amazingly talented and beautiful wife, my greatest accomplishment and the one of which I am the most proud.

So what am I driving at? I guess what I'm trying to do is to show that it is possible to be a spiritual person without being a spiritual doormat. I'm a sensitive New Age Guy but I'm a sensitive new age guy who grew up in Brooklyn, New York, during the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties and I'm still growing up - you got a problem wit dat? Fuhgedaboutit!

These are very complicated and rough times we've been living through and no one can shirk their responsibility to stand up and defend the lives we enjoy and for which so many have given their lives so we and those who come after us may enjoy them.

The trouble is, those who come after us "may" enjoy them, there's no guarantee. Hitler almost won World War II and there has never been and never will be a time when we are not under attack from those murderous crazy people who want to take from us what we know is ours. That is why we must do what we can to make our base secure. If you've read this far, you truly are my friend and I thank you.
