Just as The Alchemist will help you navigate the waters of your journey through life, the Temple of Water will prepare you for questions related to matters of the heart.

The Water element rules our emotions, and in many facets of our lives, our emotions rule us. Like water, our emotions cannot be consciously controlled, but often we are controlled by them. If we are unable to keep our heads "above water," if we are uncomfortable in the current that is carrying us, we feel out of control.

But the liquid state, the place of dissolving, is exquisite. Instead of being out of control, we can be floating. It's all a matter of trusting the heart.

Think of a troubling emotional situation. One controlling move left or right in the current and you may end up miles downstream from where you thought you'd be. Or, like an island, you may get cut off from others and all sources of solace if you insist on your own emotional interpretations. Then your emotions will dominate and isolate you. Your heart will be needy, focused on itself like a whirlpool.

However, water can also connect us with others. Love, the greatest attractive force in the universe, is a dweller in the Temple of Water. True love is made up of empathy, compassion, friendship, and caring, combined with the understanding that we are all different and isolated forever in our uniqueness. Though this can be a lonely thought, an acceptance of the distance between us and our beloved is essential if we are to avoid the pain and tears that comes from expecting another to merge with us completely to the exclusion of his or her own will.

All questions regarding love affairs must be asked with a sincere desire to know what is best for the person you are asking about, as well as for yourself.

Our emotions can be a useful asset in making deep, heartfelt decisions of all kinds. Especially helpful is our intuition, which is at the heart of our decision-making process. We try to gain all the facts, but we can never know as much as we would like to know. All too soon, the time for decision is at hand and so we make an "informed" decision. In other words, we guess! Those that are best at it are those who have learned to trust their intuition.

In the Temple of the Deep, you will be moved by currents, eddies, and tides that are beyond your control. It is necessary to experience their force to gain self-confidence. The best answers are obtained when you know you can handle anything that comes along. Here you must also confront the existence of your deepest, darkest emotions. Accepting them is the only way to avoid being overwhelmed by fear, anger, envy, jealousy and mistrust. Our dark emotions can propel us to a new understanding and empathy with the plight of others, if we remember that the best way to change the world is to accept and forgive others and change the way we look at them.

Our desire for love, symbolized by Water, seems to be a thirst we can never quench, but which we can satisfy by heeding the lessons of this Element. In this Temple you can prepare yourself to ask the intuitive questions whose answers will lead you to emotional fulfillment. Remember, our future itself is fluid. This is why it is best if you conceive your question as clearly as possible and ask only about the very next step you need to take, instead of a long-term prediction of your future.
